Memorial Day
Memorial Day is a day on which those who died in active military service are remembered, traditionally observed on May 30 but now officially observed on the last Monday in May.
Some ways you can show honor and respect on Memorial Day is to display the American flag. You can also say thank you to someone who has served in the military (or is serving at the moment). You can either say thank you in person or you can write them a letter. Support of any kind is highly appreciated. You can visit one of the VA's National Cemeteries for Memorial Day Ceremony (you can check the location of the closest one on the website of the US Department of Veterans Affairs), or go to a local cemetery and decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flags and flowers-a great way to pay respect to those who fought for us.
Some interesting facts are that several towns claim to be originators of Memorial Day, but in 1966 Congress declared Waterloo, New York, to be the birthplace of the holiday. Memorial Day originally honored military personnel who died in the Civil War (1861-1865). Cities across the country host Memorial Day parades, but some of the largest parades take place in Chicago, New York, and, of course, Washington D.C.
Somethings I will do on Memorial Day is...
- put america flag outside my house
- say thank you to soldiers
- watch the parade
Reflection
My thoughts on Memorial Day is that I'm grateful for those soldiers that fought for our country. I believe we should take at least 5 mins of our day to honor those soldiers that have passed away. Its important to show respect to them because they fought for the right thing.
